VOICES
After School Program Offered for Girls in grades 4th through 8th
Wednesday afternoons offer a fun and exciting experience for girls in grades 4th - 8th. VOICES will meet Wednesdays after school at the Coldwater Free Methodist Church Fellowship Center (200 N. Fremont St., Coldwater). The church offered the space for the program; however, the program has no religious affiliation. The program was started by Kim Hemker and Patsy Karbon and is under the umbrella of the Branch County Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence (BCCADSV). The mission of the program is to “offer after school programming for girls in 4th-8th grade that will equip them with the tools they need and empower them with confidence to become leaders.”
In January 2014, the BCCADSV invited a group of local women to a special event, BeYoutiful, to learn about the need for a program of this kind and seek volunteers to develop the program. From that meeting a steering committee was formed to decide on the curriculum, time, location, and other details of the newly named, VOICES (formerly Girlz Club) program. The steering committee and subcommittees explored and decided on separate curricula for girls’ in grades 4th and 5th called "Girls Only", and "Voices" for young women in grades 6th through 8th.
Girls in grades 6, 7, 8 will meet the every Early Release Wednesday of the month starting October 16 from 1:45 - 3:15 p.m. and girls in grades 4 & 5 will meet every Early Release Wednesday beginning October 16 from 2:45 -4:15 p.m. When the school does not have Early release the times will be: 6, 7, 8 2:45-4:15 pm and 4 & 5 4:00-5:30 pm (see calendar)
Girls can be nominated for VOICES by parents/guardians, teachers, counselors, coaches, or others. A nomination form is available on the BCCADSV website, the VOICES website, or by contacting Patsy Karbon by email at voices[email protected] .
VOICES is a free program that will address the unique needs of adolescent girls and young women by helping them build self-esteem, develop life skills, and develop positive motivations so that they are equipped with the tools to help them make choices that benefit themselves, their families, and their community. Each session will consist of a lesson, discussion, and activity on specific age-appropriate topics including self-esteem, emotions/feelings, communication, life skills and healthy living. For more information, contact the BCCADSV at 517.278.7233 or Patsy Karbon at 517.227-2758.
